We’ve made it to October! And with October comes the launch of The Burlington Performing Arts Centre’s 2012-2013 Professional Season. It seems like just yesterday we were launching our very first season, and here we are already doing it for a second time. I sincerely hope you had a chance to join us for one of our outstanding performances last season, if not, I hope that our second season will provide you with that opportunity.
We officially kicked things off with Matt Andersen (above) – winner of the 2011 Maple Blues Awards for Entertainer of the Year and Acoustic Act of the Year. The New Brunswick native played a phenomenal blues set in our Main Theatre on October 10th. Matt filled the theatre with his blues guitar and rumbling voice, and had the audience toe tapping, clapping, and even singing along! He commented after the show that he loved our hall and that the audience had great voices. Matt played tracks such as Home Sweet Home and Coal Mining Blues from his newest album of the same title, which was released last year. The Coal Mining Blues album was produced by Colin Linden, another Canadian musician and songwriter, who also co-wrote and plays on several songs. “I’m not trying to change anyone’s lives in a big way,” says Matt, “but I love it when [listeners] really get involved in the music, that’s what really makes it a great night for everyone.” It was great to see people here from many different places; great to see a number of people from Toronto recognizing that it’s a nice little drive to get to downtown Burlington!
The upcoming Colin James show on October 19th sold out in a matter of weeks after tickets went on sale in late May. Ticketholders have been waiting for this performance for 5 months – and with that much hype you know it’s going to be a fantastic show. Colin’s musical accomplishments include winning six Juno Awards and performing for none other than Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. He has performed with the who’s who of the music scene, including Bonnie Raitt, Pops Staples, Luther Allison, Keith Richards, Lenny Kravitz, ZZ Top, Carlos Santana, and Buddy Guy just to name a few. Originally from Regina, Saskatchewan, Colin James has become a Canadian Legend, selling out shows coast to coast.
October also includes performances by harpist Valerie Milot (a part of our Classically Yours… series) on October 21st, British modern-folk band Oysterband on October 23rd, and Arlo Guthrie will celebrate Woody Guthrie’s 100th Birthday on October 26th.
We’ve had a great start to our 2012-2013 Professional Season, and we’re looking forward to continuing this success with the rest of our performances.
See you at the theatre!
